Frequently asked questions
Why do Vietnamese invoices need the amount in words?
Vietnamese VAT invoices (hóa đơn GTGT) and most contracts have a line called “Số tiền viết bằng chữ”, the total written in words, so the figure cannot be altered. Accounting software and tax staff expect the standard wording this tool produces.
What does “chẵn” mean at the end?
“Chẵn” means the amount is exact, with nothing after it. It is customary on invoices; untick the option if your template does not use it.
Does 1,000 use “nghìn” or “ngàn”?
The tool uses “nghìn”, the standard form on invoices. “Ngàn” is the southern spoken form and is understood everywhere.
How are decimals handled?
Vietnamese uses a comma for decimals and a dot for thousands. Type 3,14 to get “ba phẩy một bốn”. If you type 1,250,000 with several commas, the tool reads it as thousands separators.
